KAWARTHA LAKES-This is a photograph of Bobcaygeon’s locks and grist mill circa 1905. “Until 1920, the locks were located downstream from the swing bridge. The building to the right of the locks is the lockmaster’s building. There was a sign on the lockmaster’s house, in great big letters it said ‘Bobcaygeon.’ Nowadays, when you go on a train you see those big signs to say what town you are in and this was for the boaters going through so they knew they were in Bobcaygeon. Behind that is the grist mill. The steamer in the background is docked at the lower wharf,” the Water’s Edge Restaurant was later in this location. At that time, the locks had stone walls, with a big square timber on the edge. The lock had wooden doors, and they were opened and closed with a crank that is visible in the foreground.
