Three Out Of Four Ontarians Want Province To Extend Gas Tax Cut According To Recent Poll

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released a Leger poll today showing three out of four Ontarians want to see the Ford government’s 6.4 cents per litre gas tax cut extended into 2024.

“An overwhelming majority of Ontarians want to see the Ford government’s gas tax cut extended,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “The tax cut has saved families hundreds of dollars, but it’s set to expire if Premier Doug Ford doesn’t act. Ford needs to make sure that taxpayers aren’t pummelled with a gas tax hike to ring in the new year.”

According to the group, the Ford government’s gas tax cut has saved the average two-car family $500 since it was introduced in July of 2022. Taxpayers have saved more than $1 billion overall.

The tax cut was originally due to expire in December of 2022, but the Ford government extended the tax cut for another year last November. As of today, the tax cut is set to expire on Jan. 1, 2024.

“Ford’s gas tax cut has been a welcome relief for Ontario families as they continue to face annual carbon tax hikes from the federal government,” said Goldberg. “Ford needs to do the right thing and extend his gas tax cut for another year.”
