“Lonely” Nanny receives almost 2,000 Christmas cards after appeal from granddaughter

KAWARTHA LAKES-With a stamp and a few kind words people from all over the world came together to make Christmas magic for a lonely grandmother.

Kawartha Lakes resident Lianne Barley took to facebook in November to ask her friends and family to send a card to her ‘Nanny” Eleanor Murphy, for her 100th Christmas. She said her Nanny was very lonely and asked for a Christmas miracle from local residents.

Kawartha 411 News picked up the story and it went viral. Barley says to date her grandmother received almost 2000 cards from all over the world including Japan, Australia, England, Ireland, every province and territory, California, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada,New York, Idaho and more!

“It is truly, truly unbelievable the amount of people from around the world who took the time to write a card, story, note. Make homemade cards, send pictures, little gifts and most of all love and energy to this beautiful lady. She can’t believe that so many people cared about her!” Barley says “She told me today, “I think this saved my life my dear.” She is livelier, funnier, happier than she has been in a long time.”

Thousands of cards arrived at Nannies house after plea from granddaughter.

Even some local school children look Nanny under their wing with students at Ridgewood Public School in Coboconk and Woodville Public School sending cards.

Christmas is “lonely” for Eleanor because her family is not close by in Toronto but she has fantastic eyesight and loves to get cards and mail Barley said.

Some people even sent small gifts.

‘To every school teacher, nursery school teacher, girl guide leader, boy scout leader, bible school teacher who took the time to have your children make cards…thank you!!! She kisses everyone and says they are so beautiful!! To everyone of you that posted, shared, wrote, mailed, sent energy and loved my Nanny this Christmas… Thank You!!”
