Remembrance Day Services In Kawartha Lakes

KAWARTHA LAKES-Residents across Kawartha Lakes are invited to honour our veterans those who continue to serve with Remembrance Day services on November 11 and Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8.

“The freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today came at a great cost,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “On Remembrance Day, we honour the generations of Canadians who answered the call to serve, those who never returned home and those who continue to serve our country today. Their courage and sacrifice deserve our gratitude, not just on November 11, but every day.”

Canadians recognize Indigenous Veterans Day to honour the important contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people who served in Canada’s military, contributions that have long been left out of Canada’s history.

“It’s important that we remember the Indigenous men and women who have answered the call to serve in every major conflict, including the War of 1812,” said Ward 3 Councillor Mike Perry. “Too many came home to a country that didn’t honour that service. I invite everyone in Kawartha Lakes to pause, learn their stories, and respect their service and sacrifice  shoulder to shoulder with all members who’ve served and are currently serving. We will remember them.” Councillor Perry is Métis and a past member of the Canadian Army Reserves (Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment).

Indigenous veterans have played important roles in Canada’s military history, serving, fighting, dying, and recovering alongside their fellow Canadian Armed Forces comrades. They have served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and on international peacekeeping missions. To learn more, visit Toronto’s Indigenous Veterans Day page.

Local Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held in communities throughout Kawartha Lakes.
