KAWARTHA LAKES-Here is Bob Swartman with his guide boat heading through the locks. He was “one of the guides that used to go out with the tourists. It’s something that we don’t see anymore. I remember when I came down beside what is now Buckeye, there used to be a whole row of cars there, all Ohio license plates, and that’s why it is called the Buckeye. All those people used to go down to the locks in the morning and the guides used to be waiting there sometimes ten of them in a row, and all taking the people on board and going down the lake fishing. I think it was about $20 a day. They put the worms on for you, gave you a free meal of fish at noon and spent the day fishing with you. I think they took the fish off the hook for you.”
