KAWARTHA LAKES-Bobcaygeon’s residents braved the frosty weather to remember those who have served their country. This year marks the eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. During that conflict countless local residents contributed in one way or another: As nurses and doctors; soldiers; or factory workers. People rallied to buy victory bonds, knit socks or grow potatoes to help with the war effort. Local children gathered milkweed pods that were used for fibre to make lifejackets. In an era of rationing, just about everyone had to make do without. As the experience of serving overseas in this conflict is passing from living memory, Bobcaygeon residents took a moment to reflect on all the sacrifices made in service of their country over the years.
Wreaths Laid at Bobcaygeon’s Cenotaph
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
