Local Doctors Recognized For Outstanding Care And Dedication

KAWARTHA LAKES-Family doctors in Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough areas are being recognized by patients and the Ontario College of Family Physicians for the outstanding care they provide and their dedication to the community.

Sandra Sharpe is recognizing her doctor, Dr. Laura Millson of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team in Lindsay. She says: “Dr. Millson embodies all the characteristics that make a great family doctor, including expertise, active listening, empathy and a willingness to refer when necessary. She has been invaluable to me as I age and throughout my long Covid journey, and I consider myself blessed to be in her care.

The recognition is part of a campaign to highlight the essential role of family physicians. The Ontario College of Family Physicians asked Ontarians a simple question: ‘Tell us how your family doctor has gone above and beyond for you.’The response was overwhelming and heartfelt, resulting in more than 750 family physicians, including 35 in Peterborough and its surrounding areas, being honoured.

“What we heard from patients in all corners of the province, including in the Peterborough area, is that family physicians are there for patients, providing care when they need it most,” said Dr. Jobin Varughese, President, Ontario College of Family Physicians. “We are thankful for the dedication and care that family physicians show to patients.”

Dr. David Van Loon, of the Millbrook Medical Centre is among those being recognized. One of his patients, Lynda Todd, credits him with tirelessly caring for and building trusting relationships with her entire family. Ms. Todd says:

“I am incredibly thankful for the care provided by Dr. Van Loon. He has been my family doctor since I was three years old, and now he cares for my entire family. Dr. Van Loon’s personalized attention ensures that he understands our unique health histories, providing care that feels tailored to each of us. His comprehensive approach addresses both our physical and emotional well-being, and the consistency of having him as our doctor has built a trusting relationship over the years. Dr. Van Loon emphasizes preventive care and helps us stay ahead of potential health issues with regular checkups and screenings. He is always available when needed, whether for routine visits or urgent concerns, which provides us with peace of mind. Dr. Van Loon’s family-centered approach to care means he understands the dynamics and health needs of each family member and enhances our overall well-being. His dedication and compassion have been invaluable to us, and we are deeply grateful for his unwavering support and excellent care throughout the years.”

Karen Warner is recognizing her family doctor, Dr. Donald Spink, of the Brookdale Family Clinic, in Peterborough. She says: “I have known Dr. Spink since I was 16 and that was over 40 years ago. I consider him a confidant who always makes the time to listen. I can truly say that he has shone with the truest intentions towards mankind and that I am honoured to know him and receive care from him.

Carol Florence is recognizing her family doctor, Dr. Natalie Binette, of the Peterborough Health Team. She says: “Dr. Binette is truly a caring and empathetic caregiver. My husband recently experienced a health issue and Dr. Binette was so supportive of the issues he endured. She followed up (often after hours) to ascertain his condition and if further testing or care was needed, she made sure it happened. She (like her mother, our former family physician) demonstrates what I wish every Ontarian could experience.

The Ontario College of Family Physicians also heard from Ontarians who do not have a family doctor – and want one. There are 2.5 million Ontarians without access to a family doctor according to the college.

Family physicians are the foundation of our health care system, and every Ontarian should have access to one,” said Deepy Sur, CEO, Ontario College of Family Physicians. “We can get there by ensuring family physicians have the right supports in the right place to allow them to continue to provide patient care.”

The Ontario College of Family Physicians is calling for every Ontarian to have access to a family doctor working with a team, enabled by the right technology. Visit LifeWithADoctor.ca to learn more.
