Fire Department Issues Warning After Responding To Carbon Monoxide Emergencies Due To Blocked Furnace Vents

KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha Lakes Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents to make sure your furnace vents are clear.
Officials say Station 1 responded to two CO emergencies caused by snow-blocked furnace vents in 24 hours. CO is a silent, deadly gas—take action to protect your home:
  •  Clear vents (furnace, hot water heater, dryer, fireplace) of snow and debris.
  • Get annual inspections for fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, and vents.
  • Use equipment safely:
  • Generators & BBQs stay outside.
  • Never use a stove or oven for heat.
  • Open the flue before using a fireplace.
  • Avoid vehicle-related CO risks—never run a car or fuel-powered engine in a garage, even with the door open.
  • Install & maintain CO alarms:
  • Place outside sleeping areas & on every level.
  • Test monthly, replace batteries yearly.
If your CO alarm sounds or you feel symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), get outside immediately and call 9-1-1!
