Kawartha Lakes Hockey Challenge Collected Over 31,000 Pounds Of Food For Local Food Banks

KAWARTHA LAKES-The third annual Kawartha Lakes Hockey Challenge made a huge dent in the gaps in inventory at Kawartha Lakes Food Source.

The challenge is part of a tournament hosted by Kawartha Lakes Hockey, a registered non-profit focused on the hockey experience and giving back to the community.

31 teams participated donating a collective total of 31,430 pounds of food! That’s equal to… 1.2 million pucks, or 1,200 sets of goalie gear, or 10 Zambonis! WOW!

“We are overwhelmed with the success of the KL Hockey Challenge and its ability to once again fill significant gaps in our inventory” said Distribution Manager, Derrick.  “We would’ve run out of food before spring, considering the continuous rise in food bank use.”

According to the latest Hunger Count 2024 there will be 2 million visits to food banks in Canada this month alone. The highest number in recorded history. Kawartha Lakes Food Source says it is seeing a similar increase in numbers locally.

“Hockey teaches so many skills… but it the off ice ones that players carry throughout their lives,” said KL Hockey.

“We want to thank every player that participated and worked incredibly hard to collect food for us. We also want to thank all the parents and guardians that dedicated their time to helping with the food drive, and KL Hockey for supporting us again this year. You’re all making an incredible difference in our community!” added KL Food Source.
