Impaired Driving Charges Laid In Collision Involving School Bus

PETERBOROUGH-A two-vehicle collision involving a school bus has resulted in one driver being charged with Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle.

Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two-vehicle collision on Buckhorn Road in Selwyn Township that was reported at approximately 3:30pm on November 21, 2023. Police say an eastbound vehicle travelling on Deer Bay Road collided with a northbound school bus travelling on Buckhorn Road. Seven students were on the bus at the time of the collision, but no injuries were reported. Upon arrival, OPP Officers say they spoke with the driver of the eastbound vehicle and determined they were under the influence of alcohol.

21-year-old Isaiah Smoke of Peterborough, ON, was arrested and charged with Operation while impaired-alcohol and Operation while impaired-alcohol – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for seven days and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on December 19, 2023.

The Peterborough County OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
