Deadly Weekend On Area Lakes As OPP Investigate Two Drownings

KAWARTHA LAKES-It has been a tragic and deadly weekend on area lakes.

Members of the Bancroft OPP pulled the body of a 22 year old female from Papineau Lake this afternoon.

Police say on June 5th just before 8:00 p.m. members from the Bancroft Detachment responded to reports that a female from Scarborough went missing in the water on Papineau Lake, Municipality of Hastings Highlands. Officers received information that the female had fallen off a floating device while in the water and did not make it back to shore.

A search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the OPP Emergency Response Team. The search resumed on June 6, 2021 with the assistance of the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU).

Just before 2:00 p.m. the female was located deceased by USRU.

A post mortem is scheduled and the investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner. Foul play is not suspected.

Peterborough County OPP and emergency crews were called to assist after a male failed to surface while swimming in the Crowe River Saturday morning at approximately 11:45am.

Police say a male was in the river with a friend when he went into distress and slipped under the water. The male was located by bystanders and CPR was initiated. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation and the identification of the deceased will not be released until the next of kin are notified.
