Grand Experience restaurant closing after 160 years in business

KAWARTHA LAKES-A piece of Lindsay history is closing it’s doors for good on August 31.

The Grand Experience restaurant will be going dark after after 160 years in business.

Owner Charlie McDonald had owned the business for ten years. He told Kawartha 411 news he’s sad to see it go but he had no choice. McDonald says the building is sold and he was given 30 days notice to vacate.

“After 160 years of serving the Downtown Lindsay community, the buildings of 171-185 Kent Street have been sold, and because I have not had a lease since this past March, we have been evicted with 30 days notice.” McDonald said on Facebook. “To say that I am devastated would be an understatement. This restaurant has been a staple of the community and there have been a million memories made under this roof.”

APG Kent Street Properties formerly owned the property and planned to redevelop it, keeping space for the Grand. The sale means 30 additional people will be out of a job during the pandemic.

“The management can’t thank our staff enough, who over the years have become part of our family and gave their heart, pride and soul to their work. It has not gone unnoticed, and The Grand wouldn’t have been what is was without you.”

McDonald says he doesn’t know what the future holds for the building but he would like to find a new location for the restaurant.

“We will miss the daily socializing with our many regular patrons, as well as meeting new people who come and go. With our catering events, we’ve been honoured to be part of your family celebrations, both happy and sad.”
