Preliminary inquiry begins into murder of Kawartha Lakes woman

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Preliminary Inquiry into the murder of a 35 year old Kawartha Lakes woman began today in a Lindsay courtroom.

On May 29th, 2018 officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP responded to a fire on Aino Beach Road where fire crews had found a deceased woman at the residence. She was later identified as 35 year old, Heeley Rae Balanga.

On June 2nd 2018, 44 year old Ross Ronald Dion of Little Britain was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder and Arson – Disregard for Human Life. He’s been in custody since being charged.

Balanga’s mother Sunny was called to the witness stand today. A publication ban prevents us from reporting on any of the evidence presented.

The Preliminary inquiry is scheduled to take ten days with a pathologist set to take the stand next week.

A Preliminary Inquiry is used to determine whether the Crown has sufficient evidence to warrant committing the accused to trial.
