KAWARTHA LAKES-If you are heading outside today you better bundle up! Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the City of Kawartha Lakes.
A period of very cold wind chills is expected. Extreme wind chill values of minus 30 or below are occurring this morning.
Wind chills will moderate during daytime hours. However, tonight wind chill values are again expected to be minus 30 or below.
Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:
- Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
- Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes
- Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
- Peterborough City – Lakefield – Southern Peterborough County
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk according to Environment Canada.
Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
Experts recomment you dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.
Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
