#Giving Tuesday puts the spirit of the season back into the holidays

KAWARTHA LAKES-Black Friday frenzy followed by mad dash Cyber Monday can leave holiday shoppers feeling a little frazzled. That’s where #GivingTuesday comes in to help put the “happy” back into Happy Holidays!

This year on Tuesday, November 28, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration, and kicks off the charitable season, when many people focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

“#GivingTuesday is the perfect opportunity for people to make a donation that will have a lasting impression on a young person in our community,” said Kawartha Conservation Foundation Chair Julia Taylor. Donations made this year will support Kawartha Conservation’s Connecting Kids with Nature program. “It’s a fully-immersive program that introduces children to the wonders of nature in an educational, fun and hands-on experience, the Connecting Kids to Nature program includes single day programming and up to week long summer camps.”

Providing this type of hands-on, educational programming isn’t cheap however, and in order to keep the costs down for families, Kawartha Conservation relies on the donations and support of the community to help fund these environmental and nature-based educational experiences. “Together we can all make a positive difference in the lives of children and for the future of our planet,” Ms. Taylor continued.

The Unted Way City of Kawartha Lakes is also looking for donations for #GivingTuesday. “Join us this year in Giving Tuesday: an international day of giving after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, an anonymous donor has offered to match any donations up to $1,500.00 during the week of November 28th to December 5th – making your gift go twice as far. Click the link below to donate now, including #GivingTuesdayMatch in the message box” said Elly Millington, Community Development Assistant.

90% of Canadians will access a United Way funded program in their lifetime according to Barton Dyke. After the government, United Ways are the second largest funder of social services in Ontario with approximately 6.9 million invested in local programs since 1986.    In addition the United Way has invested over $975,000 in community projects since 2005. 40 United Way garden plots help hundreds of people locally access fresh produce and improve food literacy.
