ONTARIO-THE OPP says an illegal cannabis production site has been dismantled in Madoc following the seizure of approximately $663,000 in illegal cannabis by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET).
In September 2026, members of the OPP PJFCET initiated an investigation into a suspected illegal cannabis grow operation at a property on Cooper Road.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, a search warrant was executed by members of the OPP PJFCET, assisted by the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, East Region Community Street Crime Unit, Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit and Central Hastings Detachment. No individuals were located during the execution of the warrant.
Officers seized 663 illegal cannabis plants with an estimated value of $663,000. The investigation is ongoing according to police. There’s no word on charges.
The Ontario government recently announced it intends to introduce changes to strengthen enforcement against illegal cannabis sales.
The proposed changes, which will be part of an upcoming package of legislative changes, would give the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) new tools to address unauthorized cannabis storefronts and unlawful online retail operations, including the authority to conduct inspections, seize illegal cannabis products and equipment and issue administrative monetary penalties.
“Illegal cannabis retailers that operate outside the rules undermine the businesses that play by them and contribute to Ontario’s strong economy,” said Attorney General Doug Downey. “To help build the strongest economy in the G7 and protect Ontario from threats to our communities, we are proposing measures to strengthen enforcement, protect consumers and support a fair and competitive marketplace.”
