BANCROFT-The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a 17-year-old male reportedly ingested an illicit substance while in police custody in Bancroft.
A spokesperson for the The SIU told Kawartha 411 News that at approximately 5 p.m. on August 8, 2026, OPP officers attended the area of Hastings Street North in Bancroft to investigate a shoplifting call. Officers later located a person of interest. The 17-year-old male was arrested and transported to the police detachment.Â
The following morning, while lodged in a cell, the teenager complained he wasn’t feeling well, and had ingested an illicit substance. He was transported to hospital for treatment.
The OPP says on Sunday, August 9, 2026, shortly after 8:00 a.m., members of the Bancroft OPP arrested an individual in relation to an ongoing investigation. On August 9, 2026, around 8:00 a.m. the individual required medical attention while in custody and was transported to a local hospital.
As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP says it will not be able to provide further information.
