NORTHUMBERLAND-The Northumberland is reminding residents that leaving vehicles unlocked and valuables in plain view provides criminals with an easy opportunity to commit theft.
On July 17, 2026, shortly before 5:00 a.m., members of the Northumberland OPP responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from a residence in Campbellford.
The vehicle was located a short time later, unoccupied, in the surrounding area. Items had been removed from inside the vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being assisted by OPP Forensic Identification Services (IDENT).
Police say this incident serves as a reminder that simple steps can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Whether parked at home, at work, or while running errands, motorists are encouraged to secure their vehicles and remove valuables from sight.
The Northumberland OPP encourages residents to follow these crime prevention tips:
- Never leave a running vehicle unattended.
- Lock vehicle doors and close all windows.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
- Remove wallets, purses, identification, electronics and other personal belongings from the vehicle.
- Keep vehicle ownership and insurance documents secure.
- Pocket your keys and secure key fobs inside your residence.
- Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
Criminals often target unattended vehicles looking for opportunities according to police. Items commonly sought include wallets, identification, bank cards, electronic devices, cash and tools. Stolen identification and personal documents may also be used to commit further crimes, causing additional hardship for victims.
