Harry Van Oudenaren’s Memories Of Farmers Picking Up Implements At Bobcaygeon’s Grist Mill

KAWARTHA LAKES-“In this view of the grist mill, farmers have come to pick up farm implements that have arrived from the Massey Harris Company.”

Farmers would want to have their equipment in time for spring, and winter was an easy time for hauling deliveries when teams could pull a sleigh along icy roads. In this photograph, you can see the sleighs loaded with implements.

Founded in Newcastle in 1847, the Massey Manufacturing Company merged with A. Harris, Son and Company to form Massey-Harris in 1891, which became the British Empire’s largest producer of farm machinery. For generations, farmers in this area bought equipment from this company, later Massey Ferguson.

This story is part of a series celebrating Bobcaygeon’s 150th Anniversary. It was written by Glenn Walker as part of our partnership with Maryboro Lodge.
