Ontario Fire Marshal Warning Of The Dangers Of “Spicy Pillow”

ONTARIO-Even at the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) isn’t immune to a “spicy pillow.”

Spicy Pillow is slang for a swollen, dangerously degraded lithium-ion battery in electronics, commonly found in phones, laptops or power banks. It’s caused by off-gassing and makes them highly flammable or explosive if punctured.

This phone belonged to one of the OFM’s Deputy Fire Marshals. Officials say it serves as a reminder that lithium-ion battery failure can happen to anyone. Even fire safety experts.
When a battery swells like this, it’s a sign that the battery is failing and could lead to a fire.
“We use these devices every day to stay connected, but we also have to stay alert. If your phone, laptop or e-bike battery starts to look “puffy” or the case is popping open, stop charging it immediately.” said the OFM on Facebook.
