KAWARTHA LAKES-This year’s Earth Week theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” It reminds us that protecting the environment isn’t just about governments, it’s about what we all do every day, whether at school, home, or in our community.
Throughout the week, the City of Kawartha Lakes is encouraging residents to make simple changes that can have a big impact. This includes reducing waste, using less water, planting trees, and choosing to walk, bike, or carpool when possible.
“Earth Day is a chance to reflect on how we grow as a community while protecting the natural spaces that make our region unique,” said Jenna Stephens, Planning Officer – Environmental Policy at Kawartha Lakes.
The City says residents can take part by:
- Sorting waste properly and keeping recyclables out of the garbage
- Signing up for paperless billing to reduce paper use and emissions from mail delivery
- Picking up litter in their neighbourhood
- Learning more about local environmental programs and services
“Managing waste responsibly is about more than disposal,” said Heather Dzurko, Manager of Waste Management at Kawartha Lakes. “It’s about reducing what we use, rethinking what we throw away, and protecting our planet for future generations.”
