Impaired Driving Charges Laid After Vehicle Located In The Ditch

PETERBOROUGH COUNTY-Officers from the Peterborough County OPP have charged an Oshawa man with impaired driving after attending a call for a vehicle in the ditch.

On Saturday March 14, 2026, just before 6:00am, an officer from the Peterborough County OPP detachment was dispatched to a call for a vehicle that was located in the ditch on County Road 40 in Asphodel-Norwood Township according to police. The caller advised that they had observed the vehicle in the ditch with the driver still behind the wheel. The caller attempted to communicate with the driver but was unsuccessful so they contacted police.

Officers arrived on scene and with the assistance of Fire personnel, the driver was removed from the vehicle and then assessed by EMS. The officer spoke to the driver who was arrested and transported to the Peterborough County OPP detachment for further testing.

33-year-old Jacob Cooney of Oshawa was arrested and charged with;

• Operation while impaired

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80+)

• Fail to surrender insurance card

• Drive motor vehicle, no permit

• Have care or control of vehicle with cannabis readily available

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on April 21, 2026 and had their driver’s licence suspended for 90-days, and their vehicle impounded for seven days.

The Peterborough County OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
