NORTHUMBERLAND-Northumberland OPP officers conducted a focused enforcement initiative last week to address the ongoing and dangerous issue of distracted driving on our roads. The goal was simple: reduce collisions, change driver behaviour, and reinforce that distraction behind the wheel is never worth the risk according to police.
Over the course of the week-long initiative, officers laid the following charges:
- 52 Cell Phone-Related Charges
- 3 Seat Belt Offences
- 39 Other Highway Traffic Act (HTA) Charges
Police say distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of collisions in Ontario. Provincial data highlights that drivers engaged in distraction-related behaviours significantly increase their risk of causing serious or fatal crashes. According to the Government of Ontario, using a hand-held device while driving is illegal, and penalties for distracted driving can include fines, demerit points, license suspensions, and increased insurance costs.
The Northumberland OPP reminds all motorists that even momentary inattention-whether checking a message, adjusting a device, or other distractions, can have devastating consequences.
