KAWARTHA LAKES-Representatives from the Bobcaygeon Curling Club (BCC) presented a cheque for $23,854.03 to the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank on Friday, March 6, 2026.
The funds were raised during the 23rd Annual Bobcaygeon Curling Club Cares Bonspiel, held February 19 and 21. The Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank, the only independent food bank in Ontario, is operated entirely by volunteers and supports over 225 local families made up of over 465 individuals on a regular basis.
This year’s bonspiel brought together 96 enthusiastic and generous curlers who took part in recreational play. A 50/50 draw and and Silent Auction were also part of the fundraising.
Officials say the strong participation and community spirit were key factors in the event’s success.
“The generosity of our curlers, sponsors, and local businesses continues to amaze us,” said Murray Thompson, Event Organizer for the Bobcaygeon Curling Club Cares Bonspiel. “This event is about more than curling — it’s about neighbours helping neighbours. Seeing the community come together year after year to support important causes makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
The event was made possible through the support of title sponsor Kawartha Lakes Marina, along with core sponsors The Co-operators (Willock Co-operators Insurance), Ball Real Estate (Margaret Weikmann), and Denure Tours. In addition, 43 local businesses and more than 40 club members generously donated items for the raffle and silent auction tables.
“As an independent, volunteer-run food bank, community support like this is essential to helping us meet the growing needs of local families,” said Heather Strang, representing the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank. “We are incredibly grateful to the Bobcaygeon Curling Club and everyone who participated for their outstanding generosity and continued commitment to our community.”
Since the event’s inception in 2000, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club has donated an estimated $189,000 to local charities, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to supporting the community.
