KAWARTHA LAKES-PSW’s and Care Support Assistants at Sienna Living’s Case Manor in Bobcaygeon took to the streets today to rally in protest of planned cuts to their hours.
The union, CUPE 3204 says management plans to cut 1300 hours per month from their schedules in the spring. The workers, members of CUPE 3204, include PSWs, maintenance, recreation, and kitchen staff.
“Staffing levels at long-term care communities vary from home to home based on the number of residents and their level of care needs.” Nadia Daniell-Colarossi, Director, Public Affairs for Sienna Senior Living told Kawartha 411 News. “Following a careful review of staffing requirements at Case Manor Community, we have determined the need to adjust our staffing mix.”
The union claims this will have a negative impact on resident care.
“When you cut hours for frontiine workers you are cutting care hours. You’re not going to have enough time to do the care that you need to do if you’re not here.” Joan Kelly, President CUPE Local 3204 told Kawartha 411 News.
Daniell-Colarossi says care levels will not be impacted.
“We want to assure residents and families that the same level and quality of care, programs, and services will continue to be delivered, and that our focus remains on the health and well-being of everyone at the home.”

The move is causing stress for staff as well according to the union.
“The members are losing money, they are worried, they are scared what’s going to happen when this all takes place. How are they going to feed their families, how are they going to pay the bills? It’s huge.” said Kelly.
There is one thing they both agree on.
“We are currently working through these changes with our union partners through an established process, with the goal of minimizing any impact on team members.” said Daniell-Colarossi.
“We want them to come and sit down with the union and have a discussion so we can come to a resolution together to lessen the impact on the members.” added Kelly.
The cuts are scheduled to begin in May.
