Criminal Charges Laid Following Unrelated Speeding Incidents On Highway 401

NORTHUMBERLAND-Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid a number of criminal charges following unrelated speeding incidents on Highway 401.

On December 18, 2024, shortly after 11:30 p.m., police were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 westbound in the Township of Hamilton when officers reportedly observed a passenger vehicle travelling at a speed of 174 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h limit.

Police say officers attempted to stop the vehicle however it failed to do so and shortly after, OPP received a report of a motor vehicle collision which had occurred at the next exit. Officers attended and identified the same vehicle which they had prior observed travelling at a high speed. The driver and passenger were out of the vehicle which was on its roof and both occupants were uninjured.

The driver, a 17-year-old male, from Grafton, was arrested and charged with:

–      Dangerous operation

–      Flight from peace officer.

–      Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

–      Entire plate not plainly visible.

The accused was not be named due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

On December 21, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., OPP were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope. An officer recorded a passenger vehicle travelling at a speed of 165 Km/h in a posted 110 Km/h limit.

The vehicle was stopped and officers observed cannabis in the vehicle according to police. A search of the vehicle and persons yielded brass knuckles, a folding knife, approximately 60 grams of cannabis and 250 grams of hash. Police say the total street value of the drugs is believed to be $900.

Both driver and passenger were arrested and transported to a local detachment for processing.

25-year-old Malcolm Jagdeo from North York, has been charged with:

–      Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon

–      Possession of over 30g dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place

–      Drive motor vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

–      Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

–      Breach of recognizance – two counts

32-year-old Mustapha Alawiye from Toronto, has been charged with:

–      Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon

–      Fail to comply with probation order – two counts

–      Possession of over 30g dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place

Each of the accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.

Each driver had their vehicle impounded for 14 days and licence suspended for 30 days.
