KAWARTHA LAKES-The City has declared the Ward 5 Office of Council in Lindsay as vacant.
Ward 5 Councillor, Eric Smeaton announced his resignation effective November 1, 2024.
In a letter to Mayor Elmslie and the City Clerk, Smeaton indicated that he is resigning due to unforeseen health and personal reasons, noting, “I have enjoyed my work as a City Councillor, serving Ward 5 to the best of my abilities. I am grateful for the support from, and collaboration with, the Mayor and Council colleagues.”
Mayor Elmslie noted, “I thank Eric for his service over the past two years, and wish him the very best.”
Council has chosen to fill the position through a by-election. A Special Council meeting will be held by January 18, 2025, to pass a by-law enabling the City Clerk to conduct the by-election. The by-law will outline the timing and voting methods. The nomination period must last between 30 and 60 days from the date the by-law is passed. Voting Day will occur 45 days after Nomination Day. The candidate voted in will not be sworn in until April or May 2025.
