New Superintendent Quietly Ushered In At Central East Correctional Centre

KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha 411 News has learned that there’s been a change in leadership at the Central East Correctional Centre (CECC)in Lindsay.

Jarret Merriam had been the Superintendent since March 2021. Before that he was Deputy Superintendent and had worked at the jail for more than 20 years. A source told Kawartha 411 News that Merriam was replaced in early November.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General would not comment on the reason for the change of leadership or the circumstances surrounding it.

“Given this is a confidential human resources matter, the ministry can provide no further detail.” Brent Ross, Communications , Ministry of the Solicitor General.

The facility has been plagued by controversy over the years.

Merriam was Deputy Superintendent when inmate Soleiman Faqiri died on December 15, 2016. No one has been charged in his death but a lengthy inquest found he died after an altercation with the guards.  Faqiri suffered from schizoaffective disorder which is a combination of schizophrenic and bipolar symptoms and was awaiting a medical evaluation at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences at the time of his death.

A coroner’s inquest probed the circumstances around with the hanging deaths of three inmates at the provincial jail. Arun Kumar Rajendiran, Darrel Tavernier and Stephen Kelly were found dead in their cells between 2014 and 2019 at CECC and there was an inmate hunger strike in 2020.

We have learned that Karen Stoffers became the new Superintendent of CECC on November 5, 2024.
