NORTHUMBERLAND-A two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Quinte West has left three people dead and another with serious injuries.
The collision happened around 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024, on the westbound lanes of the highway, west of the County Road 40 interchange. Police say a mini-van collided with the rear of a tractor trailer.
Traffic in the area was slowed or stopped due prior collision father west.
Officers with the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with members of the Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services and Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Service responded to the scene.
Two people in the minivan, a 25-year-old male, a 22-year-old female, were pronounced deceased at the scene. An eight-month-old child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. A four-year-old child was transported to a trauma centre in Toronto by Ornge Air Ambulance with serious injuries. All are from Laval, Quebec.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
The westbound 401 was closed for several hours during the investigation of this collision.
The investigation by the Quinte West OPP is continuing, with assistance from OPP Collision Reconstructions and members of the Technical Collision Investigation Team, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner.
