UPDATE:The City has issued a clarification on this information.
KAWARTHA LAKES-The City of Kawartha Lakes has issued a clarification on a Facebook post that said repairs on the Doube Trestle Bridge were “underway”.
The bridge was damaged by fire on September 18th.
Kawartha Lakes Fire and Rescue says Omemee, Emily and Bethany Fire Halls responded to the blaze at approximately 3:15. The location was challenging for the fire department to reach. Firefighters used an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) from Station 2 to reach the site, running 700 metres of hose from fire trucks parked in a neighbour’s field.
“It was a good response with a difficult area to get to,” said District Fire Chief, Dave Kish.
The fire department says approximately 50 feet of the 175-metre deck was destroyed and some of the beams underneath. However, the structure seems sound according to Kish.
Damage is estimated to be around $50,000. No one was injured.
The post initially said repairs were underway but this has been clarified to say “now and while repairs are underway the Trans Canada Trail is closed between Orange Corners and Emily Park Road”. The bridge is one of the best locations for experiencing the fall colours in Kawartha Lakes.
It is unclear when repairs will begin.
