Globus Theatre Kicks-Off 21st Season With Laugh Out Loud Comedy

KAWARTHA LAKES-Globus Theatre is kicking off its 21st mainstage season of professional theatre is the world premiere of the romantic comedy The Dating Game by Olivier Award-winning playwright Peter Quilter.

“I am delighted that Globus Theatre is presenting the world premiere of my new comedy.  There will be several productions in Europe this fall, but Globus got there first!  It is always exciting when a theatre company is ambitious enough to put on stage a play that audiences have never, ever seen.  I hope it will make people laugh and feel good.  It’s something we all need right now.”  Peter Quilter, Playwright
Peter Quilter’s plays have been presented in over 40 countries around the world and translated into more than 30 languages. He is best known for his Broadway play End of the Rainbow, which was nominated for 3 Tony Awards and adapted into the Oscar-winning film Judy (2019), starring Renée Zellweger. He also penned the West End comedy Glorious! about the amateur opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins, which was nominated for the Olivier Award Best New Comedy and has seen international success, being performed in 35 countries. Both End of the Rainbow and Glorious! have been on the Globus stage, but having a world premiere take place in Bobcaygeon is exceptionally exciting.
“It was serendipitous; in January I was in the middle of choosing this year’s season when Peter sent The Dating Game to me, and I thought this show was perfect to open the season. Because I was selecting rather close to our season announcement and we open in May, it happily transpired that our production will be the world premiere! When the script goes on to other theatres around the world, it will say that The Dating Game premiered here, at Globus Theatre in Bobcaygeon.” Sarah Quick, Artistic Director.
The Dating Game stars resident actor Sarah Quick (Sexy Laundry, Hurry Hard, Shirley Valentine) as Julia alongside Matthew Olver (Hound of the Baskervilles, The Foursome, Buying the Moose, The Three Musketeers) as Richard, a couple who recently divorced and are embarking on a journey to find new partners. What ends up taking place is a series of unexpected, eccentric and volatile romantic liaisons where absolutely nothing goes to plan. Joining them on stage is James Barrett (Mending Fences, Screwball Comedy, Buying the Moose, Funny Farmers) and two time Dora winner Lisa Horner (The Wizard of Oz, Come From Away and Kinky Books, Mirvish Productions; Grey Gardens, Acting Upstage; Buying the Moose, Globus Theatre), who take on a cast of characters throughout the show.
On stage from May 29 to June 8, The Dating Game is a funny, entertaining and “currently single” comedy that looks at the hilariously mad world of dating and how choosing new lovers can be like selecting deckchairs on the Titanic.
This laugh-out-loud comedy is sure to resonate with both those who have been married for many years, and those who are navigating the wild world of dating in the 21st century.
