City Kennel Services Agreement With Humane Society Of Kawartha Lakes Ends

KAWARTHA LAKES-As of March 31, 2024, the kennel services agreement between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes is ending.

At the March 19, 2024 Regular Council Meeting, staff provided Council with an update on the Feral Cat Trap, Neuter, Return Pilot Project and the municipality’s kennel services contract with the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL).

As of December 31, 2023, the municipality’s Kennel Services agreement with the HSKL expired. The contract was temporarily extended until March 31, 2024, while the municipality investigated new vendors for kennel services in Kawartha Lakes.

“While HSKL will no longer be providing kennel or pound services to the municipality we fully support their decision and vision for every animal in Kawartha Lakes to have a good quality of life with a caring, responsible, and knowledgeable owner, that is free from the fear of abuse, neglect, and ignorance.” says the City

Until a new vendor(s) is found, please note the following changes to the level of kennel service in Kawartha Lakes as of March 31, 2024:

  • Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes no longer provides kennel or pound services for animals found at large in the municipality or drop-off pound services to residents that have found a lost or missing domestic animal
  • The municipality will be providing a base level of service for dogs only
  • Due to staffing and capacity limitations, no cat pound services will be provided at this time
  • The Feral Cat Trap, Neuter, Return, Pilot Project will be on hiatus as of March 31, 2024

“Kawartha Lakes would like to thank the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes for their years of service to the municipality. Since 1986, the HSKL has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing exceptional care to animals in Kawartha Lakes. Their dedication to assisting people and pets in need remains unwavering. Their passionate staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that each animal receives the attention, medical care and love they deserve, and, ultimately, find them a new family.” said the City.
