Four Peterborough Police Officers Receive Commendations For Actions During Armed Standoff

PETERBOROUGH-Four Peterborough Police officers received a commendation from the Police Services Board for their bravery & commitment to public safety during an incident on Aug 11, 2023 in the north end of Peterborough.

At approximately 2:15pm a vehicle being driven erratically passed an officer who was on general patrol. According to police, the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Parkhill Road East when the vehicle took off.  Shortly after, police received a call about a single motor vehicle collision in the Chemong Road and Towerhill Road area.  Upon arrival officers learned it was the same driver involved in the attempted traffic stop and that they had fled into a car dealership.

While inside the business, the driver was involved in an interaction with an employee.  Officers verbally engaged with the individual and shortly thereafter, the individual appeared to go into medical distress.  Officers administered first aid measures.  The suspect was then transported to Peterborough Regional Health Centre where he was pronounced deceased.

Sgt. Self, PC Gibbs, PC Gannon, PC Northey were recognized for their “bravery and commitment to public safety” on that day.

“Thank you for all you did on that day to keep the public safe as a car fled from police, crashed and then the suspect ran into a business with a firearm before taking actions to harm himself to which you started life-saving measures in an attempt to help the suspect,” said Cheif Betts. “Thank you for your actions to ensure the safety of all.”
