New Community Outdoor Ice Rink Opens In Norland

KAWARTHA LAKES-It’s time for Norland area residents to lace up the skates and hit the new outdoor ice rink.

On Sunday, the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of the new outdoor ice rink at Ward Park in Norland. The project was made possible through a $150,000 Capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and will give people in the northern areas of Kawartha Lakes access to recreational activities and fun for the communities this winter and for many years to come.

“Access to recreational activities, like skating, are vital to promoting physical activity and building strong ties within the community,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “It’s wonderful to see the OTF supporting a fun and safe initiative that will give people a chance to get outside and get active even in the winter months.”

The new outdoor rink was constructed with lots of volunteer time and energy, along with many community partners.  It will be maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. The rink is equipped with outdoor lighting to help extend its hours of use.

“The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant is significant,” said Sherry Wessell, Chair of the Ward Park Volunteer Management Committee. “This grant has allowed us to offer safe and affordable winter recreation activities for people of all ages in an area without a lot of recreational programming. We are extremely grateful for this investment in our communities.”

Congratulations to all involved!
