Residents Asked To Shelter In Place After Fatal Collision Involving Vehicle Containing Explosives Near Havelock (VIDEO)

KAWARTHA LAKES-Members of the Peterborough County OPP and emergency crews are currently on scene at a collision which occurred at approximately 4:45am this morning on Highway 7 in the Village of Havelock.

Police say a passenger vehicle was stopped behind a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) at the traffic lights when they were struck from behind by a tractor trailer. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at scene. The collision ignited a fire within the CMV which was carrying explosive materials. A shelter-in-place was initiated but has been lifted after the area was deemed to be safe by CANUTEC employees.

The identity of the deceased will not be released until next of kin has been notified.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Highway 7 remains closed in the Village of Havelock while members trained in collision reconstruction measure and document the scene.

The Highway 7 closure will remain in place for several hours while police investigate.
