Seven Of Nine New Cases Of Coronavirus Reported In Kawartha Lakes Today Associated With Outbreak At CECC

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit says seven of the nine new cases of Coronavirus reported in the City of Kawartha Lakes today are associated with a Coronavirus outbreak at the Central East Correctional Centre.

The total number of cases now associated with the outbreak is 17. No one is hospitalized.

An outbreak was declared at the facility on September 2nd.

All cases are in the inmate population. It’s unclear if they are vaccinated. Ontario jails do not have a mandatory vaccine policy.

The province is reporting 849 new cases of the virus today. Public Health Ontario (PHO)is reporting five deaths. Three are over 60 years of age. Their vaccination status was not made public. The elderly are far more likely to become hospitalized and die from covid according to statistics from PHO.

The hospitalization rate of those 90 plus is 10.6%, 80-89 years is 9.2%, ages 40-60 is 3.5% hospitalization rate and under 20 is less than 1%.

The death rates follow a similar pattern. The death rate is those 90 plus is 2.3% compared to those under 60 years which is .1%.
