Local school board sees increase in the number of students registering for online learning

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Trillium Lakelands District School Board has seen an increase in the number of students registering for online learning over the last few weeks.

At the re-registration deadline of August 17 there was approximately 650 secondary students and 1900 elementary students enrolled in online learning.
Since then, the numbers have increased to close to 2,000 elementary students and 700 secondary students according to the board.  There’s no word on how this will impact class sizes.
In August Director of Education, Wesley Hahn, said they are looking at using some of their reserves to reduce class sizes in certain situations. The board approved pulling 2% of their operating budget from reserves but Hahn says that won’t provide enough funding to lower class sizes in all areas they want to.
With an increase in the number of students opting for online learning there could also been an increase in the need for the board to provide technology to students who don’t have access.
“As for technology, we are surveying families to determine needs and will be working to distribute technology to families this week.” said Sinead Fegan, Communications Officer
Trillium Lakelands District School Board.

Classroom teachers will be contacting families between September 14 to 17 to provide more information about scheduling and expectations for learning at home. Students will take part in an online meeting using “Google Meet” on September 18, with full online learning beginning September 21.

For secondary students participating in at-home remote learning, there will not be classes between September 8 to 15. Students will receive timetables by September 14. Full at-home remote learning will then start for all students, Grade 9 to 12, on September 16.
