Police say impaired driving charges keeping officers busy

KAWARTHA LAKES-The OPP says impaired driving is keeping officers busy and people don’t seem to be getting the message.

Officers of the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP were conducting patrols in the Bethany area on August 15, 2020 at approximately 4:30 pm when they observed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) being operated on Glengarry Road.

A traffic stop was initiated and following an investigation 59 year old Robby Tennant of Bethany was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  •  Operation While Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC)
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Alcohol contrary to the Liquor Licence Act
  • Unlawfully Driving Off-Road Vehicle on Highway contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay on November 5, 2020.

Members of the Peterborough County OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 115 at approximately 11:00am on Friday, August 14, 2020. The driver was found to be under the influence of drugs according to police.

34 year old Leslie Coughlin of Peterborough, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance-opioid
  • Operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on October 20, 2020.

Police stopped a vessel on Catchacoma Lake at approximately 9:00pm on Saturday, August 15, 2020 and the operator was charged.

Peter Bagshaw, 58, of Mariposa Township, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration-80 plus
  • Operating boat underway with open container of liquor

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on October 20, 2020.

The OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision on West Kosh Road at approximately 1:30am on Sunday, August 16, 2020. The vehicle was located in the ditch and the uninjured driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol according to police.

23 year old Mataio Hardie-Wendt of Lakefield, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration-80 plus

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on October 28, 2020.

Officers responded to another motor vehicle collision on Highway 115 at approximately 4:30am on Sunday, August 16, 2020. Police say the driver and passenger fled on foot after ditching the vehicle but were located in a nearby forest.

30 year old Edgar Phillips of Cavan-Monaghan Township, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Obstruct peace officer
  • Failure to comply with release order-other than attend court

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing on August 17, 2020.

Cassandra Tanakis, 23, of Cavan-Monaghan Township, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration-80 plus
  • Obstruct peace officer

The OPP is reminding motorists and vessel operators to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
