Local insurance company helping high school grads with $1,000 awards

KAWARTHA LAKES-2020 has been a tough year for most of us, but for Ontario graduates it’s also meant missing grad ceremonies and proms in their final year of high school.

To rescue students from an epic ‘bummer summer,’ local home and auto insurance company The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group, has given 100 high-school graduates (pursuing a post-secondary education in the fall) awards of $1000. In return, the company asked students to share some of the experiences of their lockdown through simple 30 seconds to two-minute videos.

Many focus on mental wellness and staying positive, but overwhelmingly they all had something to say about the ‘real’ state of things heading into their post-secondary educations.

“There is no doubt that this generation of Ontario teens graduating high school in 2020 are facing completely unique, unforeseeable and unprecedented challenges,” said Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group. “The winning video submissions have proven that we live with a creative, thoughtful and resilient group of young people and tells us that the future of our communities is in good hands.”

The $1000 awards are to be applied towards post-secondary education for the winning students, who must also be graduating high school and starting post-secondary school in 2020.
