Peterborough Police investigating attack in Jackson’s Park

PETERBOROUGH-Peterborough Police are investigating an attack in a popular park.

Police say a 29-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges including sexual assault, kidnapping and assault following an incident in Jackson Park.
On Monday August 17, 2020 at approximately 9:30 a.m. a woman was allegedly assaulted by an unknown male on the Trans-Canada Trail near Atkinson Road in Jackson Park. The victim was taken to a local hospital with reported minor injuries. The incident was reported to police and officers attended the area. A short time later the male suspect was located and brought into custody.
As a result of the investigation Corby Charles Dewitt, of McDonnel Street, Peterborough, was arrested and charged with the following:
  •  Sexual assault
  •  Kidnapping
  •  Uttering threats to cause death
  •  Assault
  •  Choking to overcome resistance
The accused is currently in custody and is scheduled to attend court tomorrow (Aug. 18).
The investigation is ongoing. It is believed there is no further threat to public safety.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Peterborough Police Service at 705-876-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online.

Police asked residents to avoid the enitre area of Jackson’s Park Trail from Atkison Road to the centre of the park at Monaghan and Parkhill Road earlier today. Witnesses report a heavy police presence in the area.

A similar attack happened in Oshawa last month. A 21-year-old Whitby male was arrested for assaulting a woman while she was going for a walk. On Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at approximately 10:25 a.m., officers located a female near a creek southeast of the intersection of Taunton Road East and Anderson Street. She had multiple, serious injuries consistent with an assault. The victim is currently in critical condition in hospital.

Investigators, along with members of the DRPS Auxiliary Unit, began to canvass the area and, on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, police released security video of a Person of Interest in this case. As a results of their tireless work by our members, including our Electronic Crimes Unit, investigators were able to identify the suspect. With the assistance of the Ottawa Police Service, the suspect was arrested on August 13 without incident. The suspect was not known to the victim and police believe this was a random incident. 21 year old Anthony DOIRON-FRANCIS, age 21 of Whitby, is charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Sexual Assault and Aggravated Assault in that case.

Police continue to investigate the Peterborough incident.
