Oshawa resident facing charges after allegedly fleeing from police

KAWARTHA LAKES-An Oshawa resident faces multiple charges after failing to stop for police.

Police say on July 26th just before 9:00p.m. an officer from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP was conducting radar patrol on Glenarm Road. The officer attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding but lost sight of the vehicle as it accelerated away from the cruiser according to police.

A short time later, the officer was flagged down by a civilian indicating that there had been a single vehicle collision on Branch Street. On arrival at this location, the officer observed the vehicle in the ditch but the occupants had fled the scene.

Witness information assisted the officers in locating the passenger in the vicinity. The OPP’s Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) members attended the area to assist the front line officers in the search for the driver. Police say the driver, Elijah Smith, 20 years of age, turned himself in to officers on scene, and now faces the following charges:
  • Dangerous operation, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Speeding, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Fail to stop for police, contrary to the HTA
