Kitchener man charged in chain reaction crash on Highway 7

KAWARTHA LAKES-A Kitchener man is facing charges after a 3 vehicle crash on Highway 7.

Police say on December 11, 2019 officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP responded to a three vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 7 and Lily Lake Road. The investigation required the closure of Highway 7 for approximately four hours.

Investigation indicated that a vehicle allegedly made an unsafe turn from Lily Lake Road onto Highway 7 in front of a Tractor Trailer. The driver of the vehicle, Shaine Screpnek, 22 years of age, of Kitchener, was charged with turn not in safety, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The tractor trailer then entered the south bound lane and struck a third vehicle according to police. Five people were transported from the scene via ambulance, to a local area hospital, with minor injuries.

The tractor trailer overturned and landed on a gas line, which was not damaged. However, there was a fuel leak from the tank of the tractor trailer resulting in the Ministry of the Environment attending the scene. Highway 7 was reopened shortly after 2:00p.m.
