Police outreach successful in reducing fraud locally

KAWARTHA LAKES-Over the past few months the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service spent hours working with community partners to better educate the public about devastating financial frauds taking place in Kawartha Lakes.

Those efforts have begun to pay off.

In July, officers attended local businesses, churches and retirement homes to distribute information sheets, warning the community, and seniors specifically about the many types of “gift card scams” that have defrauded local residents of thousands of dollars.

Since then, people have attended the police service with the information sheet in hand to report to police that someone tried to defraud them of money. On October 25th, a potential fraud victim attended the police service with the clerk from a local store. The clerk brought the customer to speak with an officer after they tried to purchase $1200.00 of Google Play gift cards. Fortunately, the customer was not defrauded of the money before speaking with the police.

If someone has contacted you through email or by telephone to request you purchase gift cards to pay for an outstanding bill, to keep from being arrested to for some other suspicious purpose, please contact our police service immediately by telephoning 705-324-5252.
