Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Kawartha Lakes

KAWARTHA LAKES-Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the City of Kawartha Lakes and parts of Peterborough.

The alert is in effect for:

  • Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
  • Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes
  • Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
  • Peterborough City – Lakefield – Southern Peterborough County

Severe thunderstorms with local damaging wind gusts possible this afternoon and early evening according to Environment Canada. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to track eastward across the regions this afternoon and early evening.

Local damaging wind gusts may be associated with some of these storms as well as torrential downpours, frequent lightning and hail. There will also be the risk for an isolated tornado.

The threat for severe thunderstorms will end later this evening.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
