Bobcaygeon man among four people charged with impaired over the weekend

KAWARTHA LAKES-A Bobcaygeon man is facing charges after a Kawartha Lakes Police RIDE check in Lindsay.

Police say on September 2, 2019 at 6:02PM a vehicle was stopped by the Kawartha Lakes RIDE team in the area of Lindsay Street south in Lindsay. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. 74-year-old Brian Wardlow of Bobcaygeon now has a court appearance on October 3.

Many people associate RIDE spot checks with the Christmas season, but the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service RIDE team is out on patrol frequently throughout the year.

Meanwhile the OPP was also busy with alleged impaired drivers.

On August 31 officers received two complaints related to an SUV being operated in an erratic manner on Highway 35 near Peace Point Road. Police say the vehicle was located and the ensuing investigation resulted in the driver being arrested and charged with multiple offences. The vehicle was towed from the scene and will be impounded for seven days.

Harlan Hyland, 29 years of age, of East York, was charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of over 30 grams dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Drive motor vehicle, no validation on plate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

Later on that date, an officer was patrolling in the Pontypool area and stopped an off road vehicle being operated on John Street. The ensuing investigation led to the arrest of the operator and the ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) was towed from the scene according to police.

Roger Murphy, 47 years of age, of Manvers Township, was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), operation while prohibited, unlawfully drive Off Road Vehicle on Highway.

Then, just before 7:00 p.m. on August 31, officers were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision on Monck Road. Police say on arrival on scene it was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol and the ensuing investigation resulted in the driver, Cameron Thompson, 20 years of age, of Highlands East being arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Novice driver – BAC above zero, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
