20% less waste collected curbside last year according to city officials

KAWARTHA LAKES-It seems city residents are really good at reducing waste. According to figures released by the City of Kawartha Lakes there was 20% less waste pick up at the curb in 2017 compared to 2016 and 1600 tonnes less waste to City Landfills.

“We would like to thank residents and businesses for their efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling,” said David Kerr, Manager of Environmental Services.

Throughout 2017 the City implemented changes to waste and recycling collection, most notably the transition from black to clear bag waste collection. 11% more recycling was collected at the curb, officials say. “As we recycle more we become eligible for more funding from Stewardship Ontario to help our municipality,” explained Mr. Kerr. “Taking advantage of additional funding, reducing waste and extending the lives of our landfills lowers costs and allows us to use tax dollars more efficiently.”

The City received funding of $961,938 from Stewardship Ontario based on the amount of recycling collected in 2016. The City says they expect more funding this year based on the results of the clear bag program achieved in 2017.
