Concerned citizen saves the day

PETERBOROUGH-A man who police say had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system was taken off the road after a call from a concerned citizen about an alleged impaired driver in the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant.

On August 3rd just after midnight a concerned citizen called police regarding a possible impaired driver and they provided police with a vehicle description and licence plate.

Officers arrived and located the vehicle in the drive-thru line of a restaurant on Chemong Road. Police say the driver of the vehicle attempted to accelerate out of the line officers stopped the vehicle. While speaking with the male driver officers say they noted an odour of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath. A subsequent breath sample allegedly found the driver had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

62 year old John Virtanen of Lawrence Street South, Peterborough, was arrested and charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle with more than 80mg blood alcohol content.
