More charges for alleged scammer

PETERBOROUGH-A 29-year-old Peterborough man is facing additional fraud charges after several more victims came forward to police.

During the original investigation between June 23 and June 26th a female victim allegedly provided the accused, whom she knows, with more than $7,000 to assist her in enrolling for postsecondary education. Police say the accused failed to use the funds per the designated use and failed to return the money to the victim. Police were contacted in late July and began an investigation. 29 year old Gauray Paul was charged with fraud over $5000.

Through further investigation it was revealed that between January 2017 and July 2017 the accused allegedly defrauded several other persons he knows of postsecondary tuition funds and also convinced several of the victims to pay into an investment scam.

As a result of the investigation Paul is facing an additional four charges of fraud under $5000.

The investigation is ongoing. Police believe there may still be other victims and are encouraging anyone with similar concerns to come forward and call the Peterborough Police Service at 705-876-1122 Detective Constable Reesor ext. 293 or Detective Constable Calderwood ext. 214.
