OPP identify 15 year old who drowned in Fenelon Falls

The Kawartha Lakes OPP have identified the victim of a drowning yesterday in Fenelon Falls as 15 year old Harley Broome.

There are conflicting reports about what happened. Witnesses say a group of youth were swimming in a popular spot for cliff diving when Harley went under and didn’t resurface. Others say the teens were cliff diving.

Harley was a student at Fenelon Falls Secondary School and worked at the Sobeys in Fenelon Falls as well as at the Cow and Sow Restaurant. Friends say he will be missed. 15 year old Ellie Groeneveld says he is well liked. “He was a very nice kid, he had a lot of friends, he was very nice.”

Police, Fire and EMS responded to the scene just after 4pm on Saturday. The OPP and Kawartha Lakes Fire spent hours scouring the water for any sign of the young boy. The OPP Underwater Search and Rescue team were brought in at approximately 7pm. They located the body at about 8:15pm.

The locks in Fenelon Falls were closed while emergency crews searched the waters.

Our condolences to his friends and family.
