The body of a 15 year old body was recovered by OPP divers from the waters of the canal on Sturgeon Lake in Fenelon Falls shortly after 8pm Saturday night.
There are conflicting reports about what happened. Witnesses say the boy and his friends had been swimming in a popular spot for cliff diving at around 4:15pm when his friends say he went under and didn’t resurface. Others say the group were cliff diving.
Police and fire crews were scouring the water for about three hours before the OPP Underwater Search and Rescue team arrived. OPP divers recovered the body about 45 minutes after arriving. EMS were on standby. Police had closed the locks in Fenelon Falls while the search was being conducted.
Friends have identified the boy as a student at FFSS. They say he works at Sobey’s and at the Cow and Sow Restaurant. 15 year old Ellie Groeneveld says he is well liked. “He was a very nice kid, he had a lot of friends, he was very nice.
He was taken away in the ambulance by police escort. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
